This past weekend, four members of the SIU Heidelberg Model United Nations took place in the MUN conference in Karlsruhe, Germany. During the MUN conferences, the students act as delegates, representing the countries to which they’re assigned.
Our four Schiller participants – Natia Bueno, Chris Ross, Ryan Sherring and Joel Tim – returned Sunday night, each with the highest recognition for their outstanding performance!
Natia Bueno participated in the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (SPECPOL), representing the Observing Member State of Palestine. Their main agenda was the water dispute between Israel and Arab countries. It came to some very exciting moments in the debate, with an exceptional performance by Natia. In the end, she received “Best Delegate”.
Chris Ross represented the United Kingdom on the Security Council, where other Member States and himself discussed the topic of Libya. He was able to persuade the delegates to act together and divide topics, so as to tackle the most important issues in the most effective manner. On the last day, he also received “Best Delegate” of the Security Council.
Both Joel Tim and Ryan Sherring worked within opposing Joint Cabinets, which is considered by far the most outstanding challenge at any MUN conference. On the Joint Cabinet Crisis (JCC), members have to work fast paced in order to prevent disasters and further conflicts. Joel Tim was a member of the Iranian Cabinet and Ryan Sherring participated as a member of ISIS, which constantly sent directives to overwhelm the other. Joel was recognized as “Best Delegate” for the JCC of Iran and Ryan received “Distinguished Delegate” for the JCC of ISIS.
